The Coven

It seemed a little anticlimactic, to be honest. There was no real fight in the end. Although, that was probably because Lane and Ris had taken care of… everything! There was less than nothing left to do.

It had only cost him everything.

Because his husbands weren’t in the castle.

Snow White died choking on her own blood. They waited for something to happen, like her body fading as her fairy tale reset. Thankfully, that wasn’t a thing. The idea that Mal could disappear if Wonderland was reset was horrifying. Seriously, if Mal disappeared, too, Lede might as well curl up and die.

“Well,” Wally said, looking at the five witches. “Who are you? And why shouldn’t you die, too?”

“We’ve been stuck with her for ages,” one of them said. “She has our families in cages and when we don’t do as she demands, she hurts one of them. Lian has already lost his wife, but he has two children in cages. I’ve lost my brother.”

“She’s careful and calculated,” another said. “She knows not to take them all or there’d be no reason for us to do as she says. So, she takes just enough.”

“It’s worse when she hurts them in front of you,” a third man said.

“I don’t understand.” Mal frowned. “You’re witches. And it doesn’t appear that she was. So, explain to me how she was able to keep your families and you were powerless to stop her.”

“She’s tied them all together so we keep each other in line,” the second one who’d spoken told them. “So, if I fucked up, it would be Jona’s family who’s tortured. It assures Jona keeps me from rebelling, and so on.”

“Clever,” Wally said. He glanced back at his remcule, deciding if that would work.

“But where did you come from?” Mal asked. “Are you part of her story or ours?”

“Wonderland,” the five said in unison.

“You’re the coven of witches,” Eagy said. “Aren’t you?”

Several of the men nodded.

“My coven?” Wally asked, narrowing his eyes. “I was sure there was more of you.”

“There were,” the first one said. “But we’ve killed each other trying to keep our families alive.”

“When one of you is killed, what happens to your families?” Ryph asked.

Lede was sure he didn’t want to know.

“They get sent to the field of prisoners,” one of the men deadpanned. “Which is a far worse fate than the cells they’re currently in.”

“Are the cells back at her normal palace?” Chesh asked. “And which one of you casts the travel spells?”

Mal looked to the one on the far right. He affirmed that he was the one who’d done so. Mal must have seen him when she was retrieving Eagy.

“I’m assuming you can get us to that place?” Wally asked.

“The symbols here have been broken. I haven’t been able to fix them. It’d take me a while,” he said.

“Is it quicker to fix the symbols or travel on foot?”

“Fix the symbols.”

“Are there more of her cronies at the palace?”

Several of the witches shook their heads. “Only the keepers,” one answered.
